The Vein Clinic at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi deals with diseases of the peripheral venous system, generally confined to the legs.
The Vein Clinic diagnoses, treats, and operates using the latest innovative techniques. The clinic helps patients suffering from a range of peripheral vein disorders, including venous insufficiency, varicose veins, and spider veins.
What We Treat
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Vein Clinic offers treatment for a complete spectrum of vein disorders, from cosmetic concerns, such as spider veins, through to varicose veins and serious venous complications.
Cosmetic Concerns
Spider veins (or telangiectasia) occur when veins in the legs form small blue webs on the skin. They are generally a cosmetic concern but may need medical attention if they become painful or begin to bleed. They can be controlled by compression stockings or treated by microinjections to close to the vein.
Medical Concerns
Superficial venous insufficiency and varicose veins, generally two forms of the same condition, are considered a medical problem. Varicose veins appear as non-colored soft bumps over the legs, visible when standing and disappearing when lying flat. Venous insufficiency appears as a swelling of the legs and/or a discoloring of the skin of the lower leg, indicating that the veins cannot transport blood back to the heart efficiently. This is considered a serious medical condition.
The Vein Clinic also offers treatment for conditions resulting from clotting of the deep leg veins, known as deep vein thrombosis or DVT. This can be fatal if the clot that has formed in the leg moves to the lungs.
Varicose veins affect a large proportion of adult women and men. If a patient has varicose veins or spider veins, Vein Clinic specialists will carry out a clinical evaluation of the symptoms, as well as an assessment of foot impairments and walking limitations, which can cause varicose veins. Diagnostic testing, such as an ultrasound, may also be required, to help identify the cause of the varicose veins and determine the best surgical or non-surgical treatment options.
Treatment of Varicose Veins
The Vein Clinic also offers tailored treatment plans to meet each patient’s individual needs. Caregivers work together to minimize the visibility of vein problems as well as to address the serious health risks associated with varicose veins.
Venous insufficiency and varicose veins are caused by leakage of the valves inside the veins, which normally allow the blood to flow from the foot up to the heart. This can be treated by closing the leaking portion of the vein.
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi offers a full spectrum of surgical techniques to treat varicose veins, such as:
Traditional surgical vein removal: An operation to surgically remove varicose veins.
Endovenous thermal ablation therapy: A minimally invasive procedure where laser or thermo catheters are used to close the problem veins.
Endovenous non-thermal therapy: A minimally invasive procedure that closes the vein by injecting a substance similar to superglue.
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Vein Clinic was the first in the region to offer endovenous non-thermal therapy.
