PAT Pain Management

Dear Patient,
As you prepare for your upcoming surgical procedure, we want to assure you that our main goal is to support your speedy and safe recovery.
We understand that managing pain after surgery is crucial to your recovery process. We wish to meet your pain expectation, minimizing its perception and negative impact. We would like to provide you with the following guidelines for your post operative recovery.
Positive mindset:
- Embrace a positive mindset during recovery, focusing on the progress rather than the temporary pain.
- Understand that discomfort is a natural part of healing, indicating your body's commitment to recovery.
Medication usage:
- Take prescribed pain medication as directed for effective pain management.
- Be aware of temporary side effects, knowing they will diminish as you heal.
Distraction techniques:
- Engage in enjoyable activities like reading, watching movies, or spending time with loved ones.
- Practice calming techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or guided imagery to manage pain.
Movement and physical activity:
- Follow post-surgery mobility recommendations.
- Gradually increase activity levels to accelerate healing, incorporating gentle exercises like walking or stretching.
Support system:
- Lean on friends, family, or support groups for emotional support during your recovery.
Self-care and healthy lifestyle:
- Prioritize self-care activities such as adequate sleep, a balanced diet, and staying hydrated.
- Avoid excessive smoking or alcohol consumption, as they may impede recovery and heighten sensitivity to pain.
What to expect:
After your surgery, it's natural and expected to experience some form of pain or discomfort. Our goal is to help you control these feelings and keep you as safe and comfortable as possible during your recovery journey.
Remember, pain is a temporary sensation that diminishes over time as your body heals. By adopting a positive mindset, following medical and nursing instructions, and practicing self-care, you can effectively smooth your post-operative experience. If you have any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to our healthcare team.
Post-operative management:
We have various techniques available to help you feel more comfortable. These may include:
- Oral medications and intravenous medications;
- Local Anaesthesia;
- Techniques to numb nerves, called nerve blocks;
- Intravenous Patient-Controlled Analgesia (IV PCA);
- Epidural Patient-Controlled Analgesia (EPCA).
In addition to these medications and techniques, we are proud to have a multidisciplinary team to support you in your post-operative recovery. Our team includes psychologists who can assist you in coping with pain, minimizing medication use, and addressing any feelings of depression, anxiety, or stress related to pain or other areas in life.
Understanding your feelings:
- Openly communicate with our medical and nursing team about your pain levels or type of discomfort.
- Describe what you are feeling honestly and openly share any concerns you may have.
- Visual aids, such as pictures, may be shown to assist in evaluating your experience.
- By describing the type of pain and its intensity, you contribute to tailoring a specific analgesia management plan.
- Each person's experience is unique, and we are dedicated to adjusting our approach to best fit your individual needs.
- Be honest and open about how you feel, as this information helps ensure your well-being during the recovery process.
