- 14 Residents and Nine Physician Interns will receive hands-on training as they continue their medical education
This month, 14 new residents will join Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Medical Residency program, where they will receive specialized training in their areas of focus. Depending on the chosen medical specialty, residency training can last between four to five years.
This will be the hospital’s second cohort of medical residents as it continues to transform medical education in the region and boost the number of Emirati physicians practicing in the UAE.
In order to identify emerging talent from across the country, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi took part in Abu Dhabi’s residency match program managed by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, “TANSEEQ.”
During the program’s match application process, 468 applicants applied for 14 residency positions at the hospital, leading to a 100% match rate. The selected residents will enroll in Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Anesthesia, and Ear/Nose/Throat (ENT) training programs and will join an existing cohort of six residents who started in 2018.
“It was remarkable to see the demand for Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s residency program,” said Dr. Sawsan Abdelrazig, Director of Medical Education, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. “We are very excited to have 14 new residents join our family of caregivers next month as we continue shaping the skills and talents needed to create a more sustainable healthcare landscape for the UAE.”
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi will also welcome nine new Emirati national physician interns in September, three of whom were recently selected by their medical school deans and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Academic Office to complete their internship in Cleveland Clinic, Ohio.
The physician internship program is a mandatory one-year clinical rotation for medical school graduates to become licensed to practice in Abu Dhabi. In the UAE, this year of training is required before medical residency.
“For the new physician interns, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi will be the first stepping-stone from academics into the ‘real world’ of medicine. We look forward to developing their education into practice, witnessing their passion and enthusiasm for healthcare, and encouraging them to share their perspectives on how to further elevate patient experience,” added Dr. Abdelrazig.
