WHAT IS ENTROPION AND ECTROPION?
Entropion refers to a condition where the eyelid turns inwards towards the eyeball. It can affect both the upper and lower eyelids.
An ectropion is an outward turning of the lower eyelid away from the eye. This usually affects the lower eyelids.
WHAT CAUSES ENTROPION AND ECTROPION?
Ageing changes of the eyelid tissues result in laxity of the muscles and tendons are the most common cause.
Scarring of the eyelids tissues, particularly from inflammation or chronic infection can also result in the eyelids turning inwards or outwards.
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ENTROPION?
- Irritation & grittines
- Watering
- Redness
- Stick discharge
- Inward turning of the eyelid margin can be observed
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF ECTROPION?
- Outwards rolling of eyelid
- Tearing
HOW ARE ENTROPION/ECTROPION TREATED?
Treatment is surgical. Surgery involves tightening the eyelid and restoring it to its normal position. This operation can be performed following an injection of local anesthetic into the eyelid.
Entropion / ectropion due to scarring may require a graft of tissue. This operation is done under general anesthetic.
AN UNTREATED ENTROPION CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE CORNEA AND RESULT IN PERMENANT LOSS OF VISION.
