Program Overview

Our Gastroenterology Fellowship Program is a comprehensive three-year training program accredited by the Arab Board designed to provide a rich learning environment, ample clinical exposure, hands on training and research opportunities.

Our Gastroenterology Department, within our state -of -the-art hospital, serves as a tertiary care referral center for the emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE. It provides a unique institute model with seamless collaboration between medical and surgical specialties in digestive and liver disease, thereby enriching the learning experience for trainees.

With the variety of cases in all subspecialities of gastroenterology/hepatology, a large procedural volume and research opportunities, our fellows can tailor their training to align with their career goals and develop expertise in their areas of interest to serve as leaders within the gastroenterology field in the UAE.

Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Highlights

  • Clinical Experience: Our program provides extensive clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Fellows have the opportunity to evaluate and manage a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, liver diseases, gastrointestinal malignancies, and motility disorders.
  • Endoscopic Training: Our program offers hands-on training in various endoscopic procedures, with more than 10,000 procedures annually, including upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, advanced intraluminal resections, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). Fellows learn the technical skills required for these procedures and gain proficiency under the guidance of experienced faculty.
  • Multidisciplinary Approach: Our program emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Fellows collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and nutritionists, to provide comprehensive and integrated care to patients. This collaborative approach enhances the learning experience and exposes fellows to different perspectives in managing complex cases.
  • Research Opportunities: Our program has a strong focus on research. Fellows have the opportunity to engage in clinical or basic science research projects under the guidance of faculty mentors.
  • Conferences & Continuing Education: Our program provides opportunities for fellows to attend national and international conferences, where they can present their research findings and learn about the latest advancements in the field.
  • Teaching & Mentorship: Fellows are often involved in teaching medical students and residents, which helps to reinforce their own knowledge and skills. Faculty members provide mentorship and guidance throughout the fellowship, supporting the professional and personal development of the fellows.
  • Elective Rotations: We offer elective rotations in specialized areas such as hepatology, transplant hepatology, advanced endoscopy and inflammatory bowel disease. These rotations allow fellows to gain additional expertise in specific areas of interest and tailor their training to their career goals.
  • Simulation Lab: Hone your skills in our state-of-the-art simulation lab, providing a realistic environment for hands-on learning and procedural practice.

Gastroenterology Fellowship Program Eligibility Criteria

  • Completion of the Internal Medicine Residency Program is required to join the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program.
  • To be in good standing.
  • To have passed all the required Board examinations as per the Department of Health, Abu Dhabi regulations.
  • Fulfilment of licensure requirements as set by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi.
  • Fulfilment of MEAD criteria as per the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi.
