What is robotic lung transplant?
A lung transplant is a complex procedure during which a damaged or diseased lung is replaced with a healthy lung from a donor. The surgery is performed when a patient has a severe lung condition, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease (ILD), or pulmonary fibrosis, and treatments are no longer working.
There are only a handful of centers in the world that perform robotic-assisted lung transplant surgery due to the complexity of the procedure and the expertise required.
Robotic surgery offers a minimally invasive approach and represents the next generation of thoracic surgery. It can be an option for patients who may be too unwell for traditional, open lung transplant surgery.
