24 Hour Urine Collection (for Plain and Acid Containers)

Obtain the 24 hour urine collection container from your physician or Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Pathology outpatient department.

The dark brown container is a plain container and the orange container has acid as a preservative.

IMPORTANT

• If you are asked to collect two 24 hour urine collections, one in a plain container and the other in an acid container, then do the acid collection first.
• On the morning you start the collection, urinate in the toilet and flush the first urine you pass. Write down the date and time. That is the start time for the collection.
• Collect all urine you pass throughout the day and night. Include the first urine you pass the following morning.
• Do not let your urine come in contact with toilet paper or your bowel movement. These will make the urine unusable. During collection, keep your stored urine away from light and as instructed below:

After 24 hours, immediately bring the container with the collected 24 hour urine back to your healthcare provider. Do not let it sit around longer than necessary.

NOTE: Your physician may want more than one urine test completed. If the tests require different preservatives, you will need to collect samples during a separate 24 hour time period. You will be given a container for each 24 hour urine collection.
