Dr. Musa A. Sharkawi, MBBCh, is a Staff Physician within the Cardiovascular Medicine Department at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Heart, Vascular & Thoracic Institute.
Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Sharkawi was an Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Georgia, US. He served as the Director of the Structural Heart Disease Program and Associate Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program. He is a high-volume operator in complex coronary, structural and peripheral interventions, having performed more than 3,000 procedures in the US, and has contributed to multiple international clinical trials evaluating novel cardiovascular therapies.
Dr. Sharkawi earned his medical degree with Honors from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dublin. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Lahey Hospital, US, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident, followed by a Cardiovascular Medicine fellowship at the University of Connecticut, US. He then completed two years of advanced fellowship training in Interventional Cardiology and Structural Heart Disease at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Boston, US.
He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, and Interventional Cardiology, and by the National Board of Echocardiography. His academic interests include fellowship training, outcomes research in coronary artery disease, structural heart disease, and cardiogenic shock.
Dr. Sharkawi has received multiple clinical and academic awards, including Fellow of the Year and the 2023 and 2024 Star Performer Awards for excellence in patient care, and has served as invited faculty at major international cardiovascular meetings. He has also served on the Medical Executive Committee and the Peer Review Committee at his prior institution.
Dr. Sharkawi resides in Abu Dhabi with his wife and two children. In his spare time, he enjoys world travel and fishing.
