What We Treat
A heart transplant might be considered for patients with advanced heart failure that isn’t responding to treatment. It may also be considered for those living with conditions that cause severe heart damage, such as cardiomyopathy or coronary artery disease.
The Heart & Lung Transplant team also provide heart transplant pumps, also known as ventricular assist devices (VADs) or specifically left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). These are mechanical pumps that help the heart pump blood, often used as a bridge to transplant or as a long-term solution for those not eligible for a transplant.
Lung transplant surgery is now a widely accepted treatment option for patients with advanced end-stage lung diseases. Lung transplant is typically recommended for patients who have not achieved successful results with other available treatments. Some of the conditions that can be treated with lung transplant surgery include:
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
- Cystic fibrosis
- Idiopathic pulmonary hypertension
- Bronchiectasis
- Sarcoidosis
- Interstitial lung disease (ILD)
