Overview of Program

The aorta is the main conduit in the body that distributes blood to all organs, from the heart through the coronary arteries, to the brain through the neck vessels and both legs through the arteries reaching the feet.

The Aortic Disease program treats all diseases involving the aorta and branches using open surgery and small access endovascular techniques. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi offers a unique example of an integrated approach to diagnosis and management of aortic diseases in the GCC region.

Treatments for all aortic conditions requiring surgery are offered.

What We Treat

Many patients with diseases of the aorta are symptom-free and aortic problems are only discovered while investigations for other conditions are underway. However, if a patient has enlargement or narrowing of a vessel that affects blood flow, they may experience pain in the affected part of the body.

The Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Aortic Disease program aims to detect aortic diseases as early as possible in order to help improve quality of life and life expectancy of the patient.

The most common abnormalities treated are:

  • Aneurysms of the aorta
  • Aneurysms of the branches of the aorta
  • Obstruction or narrowing of the aorta

Diagnosis & Treatment

Once aortic disease is detected, patients require long-term medical management to ensure the disease does not progress. Ultrasounds are useful when screening patients but CT scanning is the main diagnostic tool as it provides physicians with insights into the precise nature of the problem and the extent to which it has progressed. Patients may also be asked to undergo an MRI scan of the aorta and its branches.

Once diagnosed and fully investigated, the multidisciplinary team will determine the final treatment. This can be either open surgery or a minimally invasive procedure to insert a stent.

The Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi Aortic Disease program is unique in the GCC region offering a complete array of services from diagnosis to treatment and longer term care to complete the cycle of care.
