View DoctorsKeratoconus is an eye condition in which the cornea – the round, clear part at the front surface of the eye – changes shape. The cornea weakens and begins to bulge outwards, like a cone.
Usually detected in teenagers or people in their 20’s, keratoconus affects vision. As well as distorting vision, it can cause double vision or cause halos to appear around bright lights. If keratoconus isn’t treated, it can lead to permanent vision loss.
If detected early and managed properly, blindness from keratoconus is preventable. The only way to diagnose keratoconus and prevent permanent vision loss is with preventive screening.

In the UAE, rates of keratoconus are higher than in other parts of the world and the condition remains a significant cause of irreversible vision loss.
The Eye Institute, in collaboration with the Research Department, at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi want to improve keratoconus screening in the UAE. By increasing screening rates, we can ensure the condition is diagnosed earlier and treatment is offered to those that need it, helping to prevent permanent blindness.
Our doctors and researchers are conducting a screening study that will help us to better understand the impact that keratoconus screening will have on our community. The study will also help us to design future studies and research activities, so we can improve and expand the treatment options available.
To participate in our free-of-charge keratoconus screening study, you must meet the following criteria:
