Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi "State of the Clinic Report" Highlights Achievements

New Data Shows Acute Care Hospital on Course to Exceed Strong Growth Recorded Last Year

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi today launched the second edition of its ‘State of the Clinic’ annual report , highlighting landmark achievements and strong capacity growth for the hospital which has continued through the first half of 2018.

The publication documents the hospital’s yearly activities and development, including the number of patients served, growing caregiver capacity, innovative procedures and clinical firsts during the 2017 calendar year. The report coincided with the hospital’s announcement of its 2018 numbers to date which show Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi on a course to set new volume records across all centers of excellence including the Heart & Vascular, Neurological, Digestive Disease, Eye and Respiratory & Critical Care Institutes. In addition, the hospital’s transplantation and cancer care programs are expanding rapidly.

Through the first six months of 2018, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi served more than 278,000 patients, putting the hospital on course to exceed the total of over 475,000 patient encounters it saw in 2017.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has made a significant effort to increase access for patients, making it easier and more convenient to see a doctor at the hospital. The opening of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi – Al Ain , extension of clinical hours and introduction of same day appointments have all helped the hospital reach more patients in the community.

The hospital’s commitment to supporting the community in accessing its care is apparent in the steady growth in the number of same day appointments, with over 61,000 completed in the first half of the year. More than 100,000 same day appointments were completed in 2017.

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi achieved the significant milestone of completing the first heart transplant in the UAE’s history in 2017. This served as the foundation for the hospital to perform the country’s first liver and lung transplants from deceased donors in 2018. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is the first and only hospital in the UAE to perform all four major organ transplants , a remarkable achievement for a hospital in its first three years of operation.

Waleed Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi, Chairman of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Deputy Group CEO of Mubadala and Chief Executive Officer, Alternative Investments and Infrastructure, said: “These achievements are important not just to demonstrate the growth and evolution of the hospital, but also for the contribution we are making to the wider national strategy developed by the far-sighted leadership of the UAE. By offering new treatment options and contributing to the pool of available medical knowledge, we can complement the existing healthcare infrastructure of the nation and improve the level of care for all.”

“Working alongside the other providers in Mubadala’s healthcare network, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi can not only serve patients who require advanced treatment, but can also use its resources and expertise to encourage all people to live healthier lives. Our work will help contribute to a “virtuous circle” across the country, with healthier communities living happier, more productive lives,” he added.

Dr. Rakesh Suri , CEO of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, said: “When we opened the doors of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi in 2015, we made a promise to the community that we would offer world-class healthcare closer to home, while developing the next generation of Emirati healthcare professionals. I’m proud to say that, in 2017, we delivered on that promise. It was a year that saw the hospital surpass new clinical, educational, research and innovation milestones. 2018 has already seen us build on those accomplishments and we continue to take steps to ensure our patients can access our care when and where they need us.”

Particularly important to the future of the hospital and its contribution to building a sustainable healthcare sector is Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s continued growth as a teaching hospital. In 2017, its Academic Office initiated crucial programs that will support all Caregivers at every stage of their professional journeys. This effort included a first-of-its-kind Physician Internship Program with Cleveland Clinic in the United States.

The hospital continues to sign new agreements with insurance providers, as part of its efforts to enable more people access to complex and critical healthcare services.
