Class is Back in Session at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s ‘Mini Medical School’

Monthly Educational Sessions at the Hospital to Boost Community Health Literacy

​Residents have another chance to get a medical education for free, at the next edition of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s monthly ‘Mini Medical School’ series. 

The second interactive lecture, which will take place on February 19 at the hospital, will focus on the human eye, its inner workings, how to look after your vision and prevent common health eye problems. The next session follows the inaugural lecture on the human heart last month, which saw more than 100 participants, in addition to the social media followers who joined the hospital’s live stream on Instagram. The second ‘Mini Medical School’ event will also be broadcast online as a webinar to reach a much wider audience.  

“The eye is our direct connection to the world we live in. It allows us to interact with people, learn and navigate in this complex environment. We often take the precious gift of vision for granted until we start experiencing problems,” says Dr. Scott Smith, Chair of the Eye Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. 

“We hope the information that our participants receive on how the eye works, common problems people experience and how to avoid them will help them develop a deeper understanding of how to care for it.“

Presented by leading experts in their respective fields, each ‘Mini Medical School’ lecture focuses on a different topic. The class begins with an explanation of the structure and function of various organs, followed by an opportunity for attendees to ask questions. The sessions are designed to improve the health literacy of the community, supporting individuals in making better informed healthcare choices.  

It is the first time that Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has opened an education program aimed at the general public. An academic medical center and designated teaching hospital, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has placed education at the core of its mission offering a range of medical education opportunities including physician internships and residencies. 

“Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi exists to provide our community with access to physicians who are global leaders in their field. The value of these doctor-patient interactions would be enhanced if they happen when people are in good health, and not just when they are sick. By equipping them with knowledge through our ‘Mini Medical School’, attendees will be able to make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing. We are confident that an improvement in health literacy will have a positive impact on the overall health of our community,” explains Prof. E. Murat Tuzcu, Chief Academic Officer at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

'Mini Medical School’ is open to all residents, and does not require any previous medical knowledge. The second in the series will be presented by Dr. Scott Smith, Chair of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi’s Eye Institute​. It will focus on the inner workings of the human eye. The event takes place on Wednesday, February 19 at 18:30 in the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi ballroom.
