Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis of Pediatric Eye Disease

Patients are first assessed by the Eye Institute’s nurses, orthoptists, or optometrists. Following this, a pediatric ophthalmologist completes a medical exam. An initial comprehensive exam includes administering drops to dilate the pupils and takes 2 hours. Follow-up examinations may be performed by orthoptists, optometrists, or pediatric ophthalmologists, depending upon the condition.

Treatment of Pediatric Eye Disease

Treatment for children is individualized, based on their specific diagnosis. Treatment options may include one, or a combination of the following:

  • Patching
  • Glasses
  • Eye drops
  • Surgery
  • Systemic medication
  • Surgery

Genetic Eye Disorders

Eye disease in children can be a genetic or hereditary disorder. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is one of the few centers in the world with an on-site ocular geneticist as well as available gene therapy for a specific form of retinal dystrophy. Please see our Ocular Genetics Service page.
