Men: Have a Health Concern?

Don’t wait, speak up and mention it to your doctor

It’s not always easy to talk to your doctor, or anyone for that matter, about your health issues, but is putting your health on the backburner really helping you?

Mention It - Let’s talk about men’s health.

Men often go through their day putting on a strong front in order to ‘serve and protect’ their family and loved ones. However, studies suggest that 40-60% of men worldwide experience health concerns including erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and fertility issues, but don’t speak to their doctor about them.

More often than not, men opt for non-prescribed treatments to solve their health concerns on their own; however, studies have shown that some of these treatments could cause negative health effects. There is also a misconception that male health issues decrease masculinity or will label men with an illness. However, talking to a urologist will not only help with physical issues, but can also help prevent possible psychological effects such as feeling angry, anxious or depressed. Urologists specialize in evaluating and treating men’s health issues in a safe environment, where men can discuss their concerns openly and confidentially before being recommended proper treatment.

Common men’s health issues

  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a fairly common occurrence in the world and urologists suggest that it is the most common men’s health globally. In some cases, ED can also be an indicator of other medical problems, including ischemic heart disease.
  • Peyronie’s disease is caused by the development of scar tissue inside the penis. This causes the penis to curve when erect, and can cause pain during sex in some cases. Occasionally, Peyronie’s disease can occur alongside ED. There are several ways to treat the condition and a urologist will advise on the best treatment following a physical examination.
  • Low testosterone can cause a number of other issues that affect a large percentage of men. These can include loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, low libido, and potentially ED. However, self-prescribing in an attempt to increase suspected low testosterone levels without consulting a urologist could cause further health issues.
  • Premature ejaculation is a common and treatable problem. However, if this is a regular issue, a urologist can guide on ways to eliminate the problem, and may refer men to a counselor to check for signs of anxiety or relationship problems.

Tips on your first visit with a urologist

  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions: You don’t have to feel embarrassed about asking your doctor every question that crosses your mind. Urologists speak to many men on a daily basis about their health concerns, and are the experts in giving you the information you need.
  • Private and confidential: Rest assured that your doctor will completely respect your privacy, and everything regarding you and your health is kept confidential.
  • Counseling: Going through anxiety and facing relationship problems could play a role in the development or exaggeration of your symptoms. Talking to a counselor about your health problems can help with any psychological aspects affecting you.
  • Treatment other than medication: Medication isn’t the only treatment for men’s health issues, there are plenty of other options that your urologist can help guide you through.
